Overcoming Challenges for large global rail contractor - an Out of Gauge movement

Objective: Execute a complex movement involving the replacement of a 21-tonne engine

Superior Freight Services UK Ltd has been a trusted partner for over 8 years, providing day-to-day storage and distribution services. In early January 2024, we were approached to undertake a specialist movement project. This project involved the precise lifting of a 21-tonne engine directly from a locomotive in situ at the maintenance area to a low-loader vehicle, followed by the installation of a new engine.

Our Challenges

The site presented several challenges that required careful planning and execution:

  1. Proximity of Portacabins: Single and double-stacked portacabins were located approximately 2 meters from the lift area.
  2. Ground Conditions: The adjacent area consisted of sloping gravel ground.
  3. Access Constraints: The site had limited access points, complicating equipment manoeuvring.
  4. Overhead Obstacles: Overhead cables and the potential for lifting over a live road posed significant risks.
  5. Live Rail-Track Proximity: The lift area was close to active rail tracks, necessitating heightened safety measures.

Our Solution

  1. Comprehensive Site Survey

We conducted an extensive site survey at the rail yard to assess the environment and identify potential obstacles. This enabled us to formulate a detailed plan to address the unique challenges.

  1. Specialist Equipment and Team

We deployed a 100-tonne mobile crane and a three-man specialist lift team for the operation. The crane's capacity and our team's expertise were crucial in ensuring precise and safe lifting operations.

  1. Detailed Planning and Coordination

Our team meticulously planned the lift, taking into account the proximity of portacabins, ground conditions, and overhead obstacles. We coordinated closely with our client to ensure minimal disruption to their operations.

  1. Weather Considerations

Favourable weather conditions on the day, particularly the absence of strong winds, allowed us to proceed with the project without delays.

Execution

On the day of the lift, our team arrived on site with the necessary equipment. The operation commenced smoothly, thanks to thorough planning and preparation. Despite the challenges, the lift was executed safely and efficiently, completing the project ahead of schedule within a single day.

Conclusion

The Superior Freight Services UK Ltd team demonstrated exceptional expertise in managing complex lifting operations for our client. Our ability to overcome significant challenges, and deliver results ahead of schedule underscores our commitment to excellence and client satisfaction.
